"All I ever want to do is just play chess." -- Bobby Fischer
The game of chess is believed to be over 1300 years old. The popular board game simulates a battle between two opposing armies.
In modern play, each player has sixteen pieces--one king, one queen, two bishops, two rooks, two knights and eight pawns. The playing board is the battlefield of the game. The game is won when an opponent's king is placed in a position where it would be captured on the next turn. This is known as checkmate. The term check is used when the king is threatened, but still has a means of escape.
